Marine Hero

"Koinoshiranami" by Naomichi Okutsu

This marvellous image reaches deep into all sorts of Japanese artistic and cultural traditions and yet is so modern and global in feel and appeal. A beautiful, refined invocation of masculinity.

Google tells me the title means 'whitecap of love',
but I suspect something went missing in that translation.

  1. Really an excellent piece. Tensioned, elegant, exquisitely composed. As you mention, it's unusual to see something that is so distinctly modern that carries all the definitive elements of Classical Japanese Art. Even to the Fundoshi which ats to the eroticism but in a muted way. Reminds me of a wood cut, "The Great Wave of Kanagawa." The figure could be imposed over that and it would make an equally powerful image.
